Mako/Scarf OTP.
But really - this scene really touched my heart. I can’t imagine how guilty he must feel being a firebender, knowing that it was a firebender who took his parent’s life.
I can’t.
Head canon:
Their parents were both benders and Mako was always closer to his mom, who was also a firebender. (The night of the murders Bolin was with a friend, practicing his earthbending, so he didn’t see it like Mako did.) It was a cold night and his mom took off her scarf and put it on Mako, though it was too bug for him at the time. A moment later the mugger jumped out of an ally way and attacked the unsuspecting family. He thinks about her every morning when he puts it on and sometimes wonders what it will mean for him when it becomes too ragged to wear. Will he forget her warmth that had nothing to do with her element? Now, when he thinks about his parents, that night, or is just in need of comfort, he pulls it close, pretending he can still smell her scent on the thread-bear material.
It’s the only thing he has never shared with his brother and Bolin knows not to bring it up. It hurts Mako that he can’t give Bolin and himself a life where they wouldn’t have to scrape by from day-to-day, but he still can’t bring himself to give up the one thing that he has left of them — of her. He doesn’t tell Korra any of this, in fact, he’s never said any of it aloud. When they find disguises to sneak into the Equalists’ rally he tells her that she is too recognizable and that she needs to cover part of her face. That’s when he slips the scarf off, looking at it just a second too long, and wraps it around her face and neck with a gentleness that ignites Korra’s curiosity while simultaneously queuing her in that she should not prod him about the subject (at least not for now). He almost tells her to be careful with it, but decides better of it, choosing to put all his focus on finding and rescuing the only family he has left.
Later, when Bolin sees Korra handing the scarf back, he knows that he has no real shot with her, and if he did, he wouldn’t take it. He might continue to flirt because that’s who he is, but he won’t ever see her as more than a friend, and he’s more than okay with that. Bolin could never stand between his brother and the first and only person he has let in like that, even if she doesn’t know the magnitude of it yet.
