I think the what makes me stand out question is a little hard for artists that lean towards more commercial things (like cartoonists). I always answer it with either my projects or a simple it makes me happy.

Yeah I do hear that. I had a case of post-grad depression that made me completely stop drawing for almost a year. It didn’t help that I was unemployed, which, looking back, was probably the main problem. Just being exhausted and burned out coupled with being broke with no prospects did a number on me that I’m still paying for. Eventually I got lucky and figured out another way of using what I know.

But I do still love illustration and animation and I do still want to do it. I think actually having something concrete to work on is also a lot more helpful than aimlessly staring at a sketchbook for hours. I’m really lucky in that regard also because I have a writing partner so I’m rarely at a loss for subjects (actually getting something satisfactory, however…)

Another thing I think has been helping my art woes lately is that I’m trying to experiment more. As silly as this might sound, I’m actually really glad I got into Homestuck because it made me less afraid of “ugly” drawings. I started drawing in pen and being more loose and it’s really helping. Getting caught up in style was really choking me for a while so it’s refreshing to just let go. Style, I figure, is just a mixture of your personal taste and skill. No matter what you do or how you do it, it’s going to be yours and no one else’s and getting caught up in trying to make it stand out is just going to lead to frustration.
